What is Tax Evasion?

Tax evasion is Illegal and occurs where there is a deliberate attempt to avoid paying or underpaying tax which is due.

The States of Guernsey raises money through tax revenue to facilitate funding public services, such as Health, Education and Law enforcement, therefore evading tax affects every Islander in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, as it prevents public services from receiving money due from tax receipts.

The Guernsey Revenue Service has set up a dedicated team in the Domestic Compliance Unit, with the sole purpose of addressing tax evasion and it has committed to tracking down those who are cheating the tax system.

A person guilty of tax evasion may be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years and, or a fine, which carrys a maximum penalty of three times the tax due on the individual's full income, excluding any reduction for allowances.
