What is Modern Day Slavery?
Modern day slavery is an extremely serious crime where people are exploited for criminal gain where a person cannot refuse or leave situations because of threats, violence and coercion, abuse of power and / or deception. Victims of modern day slavery can be targeted by traffickers through many methods; the promise of a better life, employment or education. Modern slaves are often hidden in plain sight and are forced into labour exploitation or a life of abuse.
The FIU, in collaboration with the Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Liberty Shared, provided a presentation on tackling modern day slavery including providing guidance to the private sector on identifying the laundering of the proceeds of modern day slavery.
