What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is the process by which people are transferred from one place, area or country to another against their will or under false pretences. This could take place across jurisdictions. Human trafficking seeks to exploit people and may be further sub-divided into sex exploitation (where persons are forced or coerced to perform such acts) or the involuntary recruitment of persons for forced labor (see modern day slavery).

Human trafficking generates huge profits for the criminals involved, it fuels corruption and empowers organised crime. Therefore identifying red flags or indicators in conjunction with monitoring financial flows is key in combatting money laundering and terrorist financing from human trafficking. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) have issued a report in respect of the financial flows from human trafficking.
