MEDIA RELEASE - Undeclared Cash Leads to Fine

A man who brought more than the legal limit for undeclared cash into the island has been fined £2,000 and forfeited almost £10,000.

A judge in the Magistrate's Guernsey Court confiscated the £9,825.00, which represented the total amount found by officers of the Guernsey Border Agency.
Nasser Rafique of Bristol, and two companions arrived in the Island on the 28th October 2010 on board a Condor ferry. Upon a search of their vehicle, the officers found concealed in the boot under the spare wheel a large amount of cash.

Rafique had however, previously denied having any cash on him. Not declaring cash in excess of 10,000 Euros constitutes an offence under the Cash Controls (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2007. The amount found was equivalent to 11,233.85 Euros.
