Cold calling computer virus scam

Islanders are currently being targeted by cold callers claiming that their Windows computer is infected

Fraudsters have been targeting islanders with a phone scam designed to gain access to people's computers by claiming that there is a virus on their computer or been accessed by a third party.  They are then encouraged to log onto their computer and follow the fraudster's instructions.  Thankfully, none of the individuals we have spoken to have fallen for this scam.

Microsoft would never cold call and ask you to hand over access to your computer.

We would like to reiterate previous advice that islanders should never hand over personal details of any kind to cold-callers, unless they are 100% sure they know who they're talking to.

Information and advice about a wide variety of scams can be found at www.actionfraud.police.uk, which is the national lead organisation for collating data on frauds.
